How to use it

  1. Look up your average last and first frost dates (local extension service or a frost-date lookup by ZIP).
  2. Enter both dates.
  3. Follow the table; adjust a week either way for the actual weather and soil temperature.

How it works

Planting times are counted in weeks from the average last spring frost: cool-season crops (peas, spinach, onions) go in weeks before it, warm-season crops (tomatoes, beans, squash) after it. Fall crops are counted back from the first fall frost using days to maturity.

FAQ

What is a last frost date?

The average date of the last 32 °F (0 °C) frost in spring - there is still about a 50% chance of a later frost, so many gardeners wait an extra week for tender plants.
